How We Assist

Programs

Centro Maya Project funds programs that offer direct services to persons with disabilities. These services are delivered primarily by volunteer professionals who work in space provided at no cost to Centro Maya Project by local organizations and individuals; therefore, a small budget can deliver a multitude of high quality services. These programs build upon the original social justice ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities, Davenport, Iowa.

THE MIRACLE OF MICHAEL

On September 14, 2009 a young mother gave birth to a baby boy, Michael Dolman Quiacaín Ixcayá. The birth was celebrated despite the fact that Michael was born with multiple physical and mental disabilities. This is not unusual in a community with lack of prenatal care, unclean water, and poor nutrition. Michael was unable to walk but so loved by his single mom, Doña Juana, that she carried him on her hip everywhere, even as he grew into his teenage years. Centro Maya Project assisted the family by funding tuk-tuk rides to attend physical and speech therapy sessions at the Somos Hijos del Lago center. Eventually Michael underwent surgery on his right foot. After countless therapy sessions, Michael miraculously began to walk.

Below is a video that shows Michael walking. This is a huge success for Michael and for his mother, who no longer has to carry him everywhere. The day Michael took his first step was one of the happiest days of Doña Juana's life. Michael is now 16 years old. He loves to eat chicken and rice. He enjoys watching music videos, and his favorite color is black. He can now walk on his own, giving him and his mother independence.

Through your generous donations, Centro Maya Project facilitated this success by supporting the family with transportation, therapy, and food assistance.
